Car Parking Information

We have recently changed the layout of the car park. We now have a Staff only area and a Patient only area. This has increased the number of spaces for patients to 6, including 1 disabled bay.  If the car park is full there is alternative parking nearby at Sainsburys, Maryport Street, Monday Market Street or Sidmouth Street.

Thank you very much in advance for your co-operation in this matter.

St James Surgery

NON-URGENT APPOINTMENTS

docbaby Routine Appointments: Routine GP surgeries are held in the morning starting at 8.30am, in the afternoon from 2.00pm.  Routine consultations with a doctor are by appointment only.  We regularly undertake patient surveys and believe we are catering for our patients’ appointment needs.

We often have student doctors sitting in with GPs during consultations with patients. If you would prefer not to have a student doctor present during your consultation with a GP, please let us know.

Routine appointments with a Practice Nurse are available from 8.40am to 12 noon and from 2.00pm until 5.20pm on most days.

A chaperone is available on request.

URGENT APPOINTMENTS

If you are requesting an appointment for the same day, your call will be triaged. The receptionist will ask for your telephone number and some indication of the problem. This is to ensure that your call can be directed to the correct clinician.

You can always see a member of the GP team within 48 hours and a member of the healthcare team within 24 hours. In fact, we would expect that clinically urgent cases are managed on the same day.

We ask that you keep your appointment and, if you have to cancel, please do so as soon as possible so that the slot is not wasted. On average, over 113 appointments are wasted every month – equivalent to more than 7 full doctor’s surgeries.

If you need to cancel your appointment during working hours, please call on 01380 711879.

When the surgery is closed, if you wish to cancel an appointment, you can leave a message by dialing the normal switchboard telephone number and following the recorded instructions.

REQUESTING TELEPHONE CONTACT WITH A GP/NURSE

If you wish to speak to a Clinician urgently you will be put on the Emergency On-Call Duty list and your call will be returned as soon as possible by a Clinician.

If you wish to speak with a specific GP or Nurse about a non-urgent matter, a message can be taken and your call will be returned.

IMPROVED ACCESS

You can now access additional Primary Care Services in the evenings and at weekends.

Improved Access is a Wiltshire-wide initiative where local practices are working together to offer increased availability of services and appointments in the evenings and at weekends.  These appointments are available 18:30 -20:00 Monday to Friday and some on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.  This collaboration by practices will ensure all patients in Wiltshire have this option, but this might mean you will be offered an appointment at another practice.  You will need to give consent to use this service.

Appointment types will vary - some being face-to-face, some telephone consultations and a mixture of bookable and same-day appointments available across the week.  The service will be offering appointments with GPs as well as with other healthcare professionals, such as Practice Nurses or Health Care Assistants.  The service is keen to balance the importance of continuity of care with convenient access for patients, while ensuring that the service is safe.

To book such an appointment, contact the surgery during normal opening times.  A receptionist will explain the process and ensure the booking is appropriate.  For more information please contact the surgery.
